“I’m starting over. Where do I begin?”

The letter
After a difficult few years, I know I want something different, but I am not sure how to take the first step. Everything feels either too big or too late. I do not even know what I want yet, only that this is not it.
Standing at the Door
The answer
Dear Standing at the Door,
You have already done the hardest part: you have admitted that what you have is not what you want. Many people stay on the wrong side of that sentence for years.
Here is some unglamorous advice. Begin before you are ready, and begin smaller than you think you should.
A fresh start rarely arrives as a single dramatic leap. It tends to be a series of small, slightly awkward steps, each one making the next one visible. You do not need the whole map. You need the next streetlamp.
Start by clearing a little ground. Not your whole life, just one surface: a desk, a shelf, a drawer. There is nothing mystical about this, though it does feel a bit like opening a window. A clear space gives your attention somewhere to land.
Then gather information instead of conclusions. Say yes to one conversation, one class, one walk in a part of town you do not usually visit. Treat your curiosity as data. What made you lean forward? What made you glance at the clock?
And be gentle about the timeline. "Too late" is a feeling dressed up as a fact. People begin again at thirty, fifty, seventy-three. They are not all geniuses. They are mostly people who took the next small step on a Tuesday.
You do not need to know what you want. You need to find out, and that is a very different job.

One practical next step
Choose one small surface to clear this week, then write down a single question you would like to explore, not an answer.
A reflection or small ritual
On a blank page, write the heading "Things I am curious about" and list ten, however small or silly. Circle any that make you feel even slightly lighter.
Optional, and entirely your call. Take what is useful and leave the rest.
